Motown has paved the way for tons of different sounds and genres to flourish in the music community, and The Roots are making sure to remind us of the culture’s impact. The hip-hop band releases their new song, “It Ain’t Fair,” featuring Bilal, which comes straight off of the Detroit movie soundtrack.
The song hears the Do You Want More group in their element as far as the instrumentation, giving us tons of strings, horns, and a pop base to pay homage to the age of Motown. We hear Bilal come in with his signature vocals, providing an emotional ballad as the record picks up pace from The Roots in the background. Towards the end, Black Thought steps in with a killer verse, that spreads rhymes about the United States’ justice system.
“Justice is never color blind, never gun shy,” Thought raps. “For one crime, you may never see the sunshine.”
Detroit dives into the 1967 12th Street riot from a historical context, as well as relating to the current Black Lives Matter movement that has swept the country for the past few years. The film stars John Boyega, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Hannah Murray, Kaitlyn Dever and Will Poulter.
